I have heard of some who are single because they despise marriage. I have never been in that camp. I’ve always had a great respect for the contributions of wives and moothers and that’s been my dream role in life. I believe that families are central to God’s plan for His children. But we also live in an imperfect, mortal world where ideals do not always materialize. Only later are the injustices made right. For now, we learn how we are to respond to imperfect circumstances.
So, in making this blog, giving it the name that it has, is not meant to be a “woe is me” declaration of loneliness or even an anticipation of lifelong singlehood. I love what Gordon B Hinkley says, “For those who do not marry, this fact of life must be faced squarely. But continuous single status is not without opportunity, challenge, or generous recompense.” (emphasis added)
This blog is simply about facing this fact in a “yes, and…” kind of way. This is your starting point. Where are you going to go from here? What opportunities and challenges and rewards do you have right now?
Home for one hearkens back to the phrase table for one. The fare is still the same as at all the other tables, the only change is in the portion sizes. Even singles need a home and that’s part of making a beautiful life in the circumstances you’re given. For me personally, I’ve always wanted to be a homemaker, and right now I just need a home that fits my current circumstances, and that means making some adjustments. There’s no pity party in it, just facing that fact.
I think homemaking is also a unifying element. I have run into people I know in the store who are surprised to see towels in my cart. No, I do not run a large household, but towels are still a necessity to me. We have that in common. I once read a cookbook entitled Everybody, Everyday which points out that whatever your age, living situation, job, me, race, cooking experience, or whatever divider you can think of, we all need to eat. Although I address a subset of the populations, this is something anybody can relate to and have something to say about it.
